Genetically Modified Sugar Beets Should Wait for USDA Study


It was shocking to see the editorial advocating the planting of genetically modified sugar beets before the U.S. Department of Agriculture study is complete.

Other modified crops have proven harmful to animals in tests, so why would sugar beets have a different result? There is a reason genetically modified organisms (GMO) are called frankenfoods.

In my view, the USDA is advocating peaceful co-existence with Monsanto, which in effect means we get to live with whatever Monsanto wants.

The Food and Drug Administration has a lousy track record in terms of looking out for the safety of the public (Vioxx, Gardasil, etc.).

Many groups are fighting this idea; thus the lawsuit.

Farmers in Missouri face lawsuits from Monsanto lawyers over seed saving, GMO seeds blowing from one field to a non-GMO field, etc.

Arkansas farmers face superweeds that appear to have no remedy.

Haitians refused to use GMO seed after the earthquake.

Europe outlaws GMO crops.

In France, citizens went through a field, uprooting all the GMO crops they found.

So why are sugar beet farmers so eager to use this seed? They would be better served to plant regular seed and risk a so-called loss of production.

If they go the GMO route, they will not get the harvest they think they will, and as more consumers discover how dangerous GMO “food” is to one’s health, sales will drop.

Suffice it to say, if Michigan Sugar puts out a GMO product, they have lost a customer. We will stick to xylitol, organic cane sugar or palm sugar.
